Pros

The offices are modern and conveniently located. .

Cons

As a career public servant with over a decade of State and Commonwealth government experience, VMIA is without question the most culturally dysfunctional public sector organisation at which I have had the misfortune to work (and there is some very stiff competition). I wish that I had the good sense to read the reviews posted on Glassdoor (and the Crikey article from 2011 detailing accusations of bullying and mismanagement) prior to accepting a role at VMIA. VMIA is one of those workplaces that is outwardly appealing. It offers modern offices and technologies, and espouses progressive values that purportedly promote employee wellbeing. In actuality, the organisation is a cesspool of bullying, finger pointing, blame shifting and general ineptitude. HR not only tolerates the poor behaviour of staff but actively facilitates it by overseeing unfair dismissals and supporting the aggressive and underhanded actions of management. There are two types of people that seem able to successfully navigate the VMIA experience - the submissive and/or sycophantic ‘Yes Man’ and the scheming sociopath. If you don’t fit within either category, seek employment elsewhere. Any time spent within this organisation will significantly compromise your mental and physical health.

Cons

Diversity you have a long way to go. Ageism pushing out the old. They're the ones that could save your backside when it all goes down the toilet LGBQT friendly? You gave us the option to wear a rainbow lanyard and sent around an email. Has a reconciliation working group. How many indigenous employees do we have? You don't seem to want to mention that. What an insult. Neoptism is alive, you get shoved out the door and they replace you with one of their own Mental health? Standard EAP Seek advert advertising finance jobs. It's just for show. They're bringing in their own You've gone from one woman on the board to all woman on the board. You have tried too hard

Thank you for your feedback. Diversity and inclusion is certainly an area we're working on at VMIA and we recognise there is always lots more we can do. As part of our roadmap of activity, we've introduced a graduate program and made a commitment to gender equity. We're proud of our pay parity progress to close the pay gap between men and women by June 30, 2019 (currently 5.5% compared to 32% across the insurance industry) and of the work being done to remove barriers for women employees to have the same opportunities to thrive and progress as men. However we also need to maximise inclusiveness for people living with a disability, the LGBTI community and our first Australians to value people from all backgrounds. As a VMIA person passionate about diversity, we’d love your ideas and positive contribution in the upcoming working groups, and welcome a conversation about your concerns in a safe and confidential way.

Pros

It's government so your salary is at least paid on time.

Cons

I used to enjoy coming to work everyday but over the last 6 months I have seen things that beggars belief. The bullying and intimidation by management to staff is unbelievable yet these managers always walk away scot free. Managers spend all their time catching up with each other taking long lunches and countless coffee breaks. Staff required to reapply for own roles. Internal applicants have to compete with externally advertised roles. Don't work here if you want to receive any respect from management.
