Pros
The offices are modern and conveniently located. .
Cons
As a career public servant with over a decade of State and Commonwealth government experience, VMIA is without question the most culturally dysfunctional public sector organisation at which I have had the misfortune to work (and there is some very stiff competition). I wish that I had the good sense to read the reviews posted on Glassdoor (and the Crikey article from 2011 detailing accusations of bullying and mismanagement) prior to accepting a role at VMIA. VMIA is one of those workplaces that is outwardly appealing. It offers modern offices and technologies, and espouses progressive values that purportedly promote employee wellbeing. In actuality, the organisation is a cesspool of bullying, finger pointing, blame shifting and general ineptitude. HR not only tolerates the poor behaviour of staff but actively facilitates it by overseeing unfair dismissals and supporting the aggressive and underhanded actions of management. There are two types of people that seem able to successfully navigate the VMIA experience - the submissive and/or sycophantic ‘Yes Man’ and the scheming sociopath. If you don’t fit within either category, seek employment elsewhere. Any time spent within this organisation will significantly compromise your mental and physical health.
