ENERGY TRANSITION | AirTrunk Head of Energy and Climate, Joscha Schmitz took to the stage at the 2023 Data Centre World Asia Conference during Tech Week Singapore. Joscha unveiled game-changing insights from the ‘Powering a Clean Energy Future’ Report, launched by AirTrunk. The report spotlights hyperscale data centres as a key driving force behind APJ’s transition to 24/7 clean energy. The sheer size, energy needs, innovation capabilities and renewable energy commitments, position HDCs as ideal partners to fast-track this transformation. Joscha delved into the pathways and costs of clean energy tech in APJ, a region marked by rapid growth and complex energy transitions.
NEXT GEN | AirTrunk Founder & CEO Robin Khuda was honoured to deliver the University of Sydney Occasional Address to the 2023 graduating class of Computer Science. 🎓 Robin shared that since he founded AirTrunk in 2015, it has evolved from a start-up that pioneered hyperscale data centres in Asia-Pacific & Japan, to one of the largest data centre businesses in the region and a global industry leader. Robin’s advice to graduates advancing in the world of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cyber security: seize the immense power of your knowledge; never stop learning, be curious and adaptable; never forget the importance of collaboration, teamwork and networking; never fear failure and always strive to leave a positive impact on the world around you.
AIRTRUNK TOK1 | We’ve broken ground on the third phase of AirTrunk TOK1, a 300+MW data centre in East Tokyo. The 55+MW building is being purpose built for a new large technology customer. The development comes less than four months after breaking ground on a 50+MW phase at TOK2 in West Tokyo. A traditional jichinsai groundbreaking ceremony was held to spiritually purify the land, in preparation for safe and smooth construction. The ceremony was attended by senior AirTrunkers and construction partners. https://airtrunk.com/location/japan/
SUSTAINABILITY | AirTrunk is committed to protecting earth’s natural resources for future generations this EARTHDAY.ORG, and every day. We are investing in our planet in the following ways: 🌏 Becoming the FIRST data centre to join the United Nations 24/7 Carbon Free Energy Compact, accelerating the decarbonisation of electricity grids. 🌏 Becoming the FIRST data centre to join the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Forum, integrating nature into our decision making. 🌏 Becoming the FIRST data centre to join the ‘Open Call for Water Action’, building water resilience across our operations and supply chains. 🌏 Proactively committing to the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations, enhancing our climate risk management, governance and transparency. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY | AirTrunk is showing our commitment to gender equity this #IWD2023 and beyond. We will continue to #EmbraceEquity and equality by: ✔ Growing the representation of women across all levels and functions ✔ Being a great workplace for women, endorsed by @Work180 ✔ Creating equity for our leaders through the Women@AirTrunk leadership program ✔ Giving our team a voice with the Women@AirTrunk employee resource group ✔ Extending our impact beyond AirTrunk with our support of Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT)
SUSTAINABILITY | AirTrunk is driving climate action in Asia-Pacific & Japan, finding new high-quality carbon credits for our residual emissions. We’re working with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand on a ground-breaking pilot to introduce the next generation of carbon projects, using a key regional resource – mangroves, particularly freshwater mangroves in cities. Over the last decade, AIT has conceptualised the unique freshwater mangrove ecosystem as a novel biotechnology. Together, we are supporting the potential commercialisation of freshwater mangroves through pilot projects and dedicated research on carbon sequestration and carbon offsets, along with other numerous co-benefits in the form of ecological services.
ANNOUNCEMENT | We are scaling up in Japan with a NEW hyperscale data centre to be developed in West Tokyo, AirTrunk TOK2. The 110+MW data centre complements AirTrunk’s East Tokyo data centre, TOK1, that opened less than six months ago in Inzai. Together, the data centres provide location diversity for AirTrunk’s hyperscale customers in the Tokyo region and support Japan’s digitalisation and COVID recovery. TOK2 joins AirTrunk’s rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) platform, offering a total of 1.2 gigawatts of capacity, giving customers unprecedented ability to scale and grow across the region.
SINGAPORE UPDATE | The second and final phase of Singapore’s largest and most efficient independent data centre, AirTrunk SGP1, is nearly complete, supporting the growth of our large tech customers in Singapore and throughout Southeast Asia. The final phase takes SGP1’s total capacity to more than 78MW and showcases AirTrunk’s ability to deploy hyperscale capacity at unprecedented speed and scale - delivering ahead of schedule, and safely. SGP1 is a leader in sustainability and resource efficiency, ensuring AirTrunk is contributing towards Singapore's economic and strategic objectives. Since we announced the SGP1 development in early 2019, we have completed the construction of the entire campus (in less than three years), bringing significant investment, job creation and innovation to the Singapore economy. SGP1, along with the rest of AirTrunk’s hyperscale data centre platform, offers over 1+GW of capacity to support APAC’s digital future.
NEXT-GEN TALENT | In recent months, we’ve been working with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore for their intern program aimed at building important STEM skills and experience for the next generation. As part of the program, we welcomed two engineering interns who undertook a five-month immersive learning experience in our industry-leading hyperscale Energy and Design teams. Chief Technology Officer Damien Spillane said: “Being in a relatively new but hyper-growth industry, we have an important role to play in building the skills and knowledge of the next generation of Singaporean tech talent. Immanuel and KC brought fresh thinking and truly immersed themselves into the AirTrunk team and we wish them all the best for their bright future. It is our pleasure to be working with NTU to foster this important opportunity in Singapore.” To find out how you can Grow@Hyperscale and make your impact with AirTrunk, visit: https://lnkd.in/g72BCy57.
