Pros

Well above market rates. Opportunities to work in regional cities/towns which was a plus for me. Good job to have if you don't want to do anything. I call it high paying social welfare.

Cons

Where do I start? Extremely heavy management structure that is very very risk adverse, to the point where there is absolutely no innovation, change or creative thinking. Don't even bother suggesting a business improvement, you are wasting your time. I describe management there as like a deer in the headlights, they know things are going bad but are too scared to do anything about it. The general line is that "our customer makes us do this stupid thing so that's why we cant change it" which is absolute bull dust. As for day to day work, well lets just say it is a great job to have while you are looking for another job. It pays well, but you do nothing but have to deal with bureaucracy all day. You soon learn that you can't actually do anything because it takes so long (takes at least 2 years to get a simple drawing update) that you give up and do nothing all day... every day, so you have plenty of time to look for a new job. Everyone is super unmotivated and is like living among zombies. Except for a few exceptions, I describe Thales Bendigo as the net that catches the poo, all the good engineers get the hell out of there as soon as possible (which can often take some time given the current market) and the lazy, useless engineers stay there, because they are not ambitious anyway, can't get paid anymore than what they are getting at Thales and the job is easy.

Pros

- Unlimited free coffee in the office. - The people you work with are easily your best friends there, and are always very supportive. - Weekly Thursday/Friday drinks are very common and the best way to meet people and see what's going on (COVID aside). - You will be trained by or work with some of the best people, and you can easily pick them out in the office; they keep the project running... - The domain is very interesting and you feel that the project itself is worthwhile and not simply 'another software' - Very flexible hours and arrangements, especially WFH.

Cons

- Career progression does not exist unless you fight tooth and nail for it. - Salaries and performance appraisals are a joke; management make no effort in these areas. - You can be stuck in an 'important role' but not rewarded or supported for it. - Project runs on 'cost points'. If there is no dedicated funding you don't do it, even if the activity would save the business in the long term - Upper management (esp. project leads) only listen to themselves and never the lower management or SwEng/SysEng teams, causing friction and issues which could have easily been avoided. - Lots of waste caused by lack of communication from system level down to software level, no planning or discussions. - Certain aspects being delayed until very late in the project causing significant delays and overruns (deliver deliver deliver is most important...)

Pros

New office for out at World Trade Center ATM Business Coffee machine Colleagues at worker level. Leadership is good at making promises and presenting BS. your manager is the determining factor. Most lack leadership ability, technical expertise, integrity, general ability to interact. excrement flows down hill. Paid to look for other work.

Cons

Fear culture No leadership HR is negligent/ evil in Carnet springs to mind. Senior management negligent, not interested, if they are involved they won’t add any value, just block or fail to make a decision. Nothing real here. French vs UK, Ausie’s are can fodder/Punching bags Early starts late finishes (that’s what they mean by flexible working. I’ll be surprised if this business actually delivers a functioning product. No real focus on people or the product.
