Where will you be in five years? It’s a common question in every workplace and one we often think about when a job seeker succeeds in one of our employment programs. Recently we decided to check in with some of the brilliant people we whose stories we’ve been sharing over the years. One of those was Jessica. A happy young job seeker, Jessica came to APM Employment Services for help to find a good job that would help her gain confidence and bring valuable experience. Living with cerebral palsy and other health conditions, Jessica had found it difficult and felt like she would never find a job. When she did secure a role with a local hair salon café, Jessica couldn’t believe it. And it was just the start of an exciting few years which would see her grow her skills, confidence, and become the face of APM’s advertising campaign. Today she’s always exploring new adventures and is about to hit the road for an epic family trip. Read more about Jessica’s experience and how life has changed in the past five years since we first shared her story… #DisabilityInclusion #GoodNews #Careers #DisabilityEmployment #SuccessStories

Did you feel anxious about coming back to work after a recent break? Many people we support have this feeling on an overwhelming scale – often it’s due to being out of employment for long periods of time. That was the case for Chrissy who despite long term unemployment and several health issues, made the choice to commit herself to getting back into work. Chrissy knew it wouldn’t be easy, but dedicated herself to working with her APM Employment Services consultant Lauren to find the best way for her to succeed. “I was a bit like, hold my beer. I'm going to prove you wrong… and so I did.” We’ve really enjoyed sharing these snippets of the open and honest conversations APM team members had with Australian Paralympian Ellie Cole ahead of this year’s International Day of People with Disability. In our latest video, Graham, a community engagement consultant for APM Employment Services, discusses how his experience with disability, and with his son’s disability, had a profound impact on his life. As well as inspiring Graham to change careers, his personal experience now motivates him to help other people with disability every day. Hear more from Graham, including how he engages with other people with disability from his own challenges.
Has your mental health at work been a challenge recently? October 10 is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is mental health in the workplace. Our APM Employment Services team understands the importance of supporting mental health and the impact it can have on us. Last year alone, they supported more than 34,000 Australians with a mental health condition through the Disability Employment Services program. Through support to prepare, find, and stay in work, our team also sees firsthand the positive impact employment can have on our mental health. In the latest of our videos, we’re delighted to share Ngaire’s story. Ngaire came to APM for support to find a new career while managing her mental health. See how she managed to find a positive path to success both in her work and in her mental wellbeing in the video below… hashtag#MentalHealth hashtag#EmploymentMatters hashtag#DisabilityInclusion hashtag#WorkplaceWellbeing hashtag#EnablingBetterLives And remember, if you're struggling with poor mental health, you're not alone. Support is available. If you have one, reach out to your workplace employee assistance provider or speak to your health professional. You can also call services such as Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Some of our team members have been lucky enough to spend some time with Australian Paralympic legend and APM Ambassador Ellie Cole recently. Look out for a new series of interviews and conversations with Ellie ahead of this year’s International Day of People with Disability. These include stories about how our APM Employment Services colleagues use their own experience of disability to better understand and deliver support to people with disability. Thanks to Ellie and all our team members for taking the time to share their stories with us – we can’t wait to show more very soon. In the meantime, learn more about how people with disability help shape the services and resources across APM on our website: https://lnkd.in/g8inv9y7
Celebrating our DES superstars – meet Maddy! Swimming teacher Maddy was one of the first young people we featured in our showcase of Disability Employment Services stories - and we're sharing again this week following Sunday's hashtag#WorldCerebralPalsyDay. Growing up with cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, and epilepsy, Maddy and her parents knew she was capable of overcoming challenges. When it came to finding a good job, Maddy reached out to APM Employment Services for support. And from the start of her work in the DES program it was clear she was a positive and dedicated young adult with a strong work ethic. Looking for an opportunity to enter the teaching environment, Maddy impressed the team at her local swimming complex. Together with her APM employment consultant they set up a role that would lead to Maddy supporting the swimming instructors and learning how to teach young swimmers in the pool. Since we shared Maddy’s story we’ve met many parents of young people with disability who say her video encouraged them to explore career opportunities with their children after they left school. See Maddy’s story and more videos of people who have transformed their lives with employment, at apm.net.au/des
