Pros

Global networks, great team of local staff, interesting industry to work in with opportunities for professional development and international travel

Cons

Racist and sexist attitudes of Japanese managers, with lack of respect for Australian workplace practices and local employee's career expectations. Short sighted approach based on limited tenure of the Japanese leadership team. Arrogant and unreasonable treatment of local staff tolerated by head office in Japan. Them and us mentality, with the advice, experience and contributions of local staff not valued.

Pros

Global networks, highly efficient and collaborative local team, educational assistance supported, international travel.

Cons

You are not told during your interview that you are expected to train inexperienced leaders who are basically cronies to ensure local staff get nowhere and Japanese expats get promoted very quickly. Japanese managers are racist and sexist and often advocate them (Japanese) vs us (locals) mentality. If you are hired as the senior local staff in a division then don't expect any career advice or development as you are expected to train the Japanese and are not expected to receive mentorship as they know nothing. During the most recent retrenchment they wiped out all local staff and only relocated Japanese staff. They rehired everyone new in the new location....yes everyone!

Pros

Everybody knows brand of Mitsubishi, the office in Brisbane is for the resources arm in Australia. Despite downturn not many redundancies and the odd new role coming up. Seems to be plenty of work still.

Cons

Culture - about 50% Japanese expatriates mean that is a strong Japanese business culture (much different to what you would see as a tourist in Japan) which is not for everyone. Establishes an 'us and them' culture along with other negativities such as a very strong finger-pointing exercise when things go bad. Often management (which are almost all Japanese expats) will recognise an issue but due to internal politics or approvals will ignore and deal with once becomes a crisis.
