Pros

Office is ok, "healthy" snacks provided, nice views, autonomy to work, hybrid work from home

Cons

If you are reading this and you're thinking of applying, or you have an offer, I urge you to stay away. Since all open offers have been pulled as of Jan 2023, no one should be starting work here any time soon. The original shareholders have checked out. They made their millions and treat the company like a piggy bank and the employees are just a number. The second round of shareholders/managers are away for months or weeks on end. They just recently put a new group of managers in their place so they could work remotely and maybe work 3 days a week. Since then, the market liquidity dried up, FTX blew up, their Crypto desk wasn't making as much money and the APAC office wasn't making anything. The shareholders panicked because they weren't going to make millions from the golf course or racetrack, so they decided to cut staff. In December 2022, there was a wave of layoffs that went unannounced, apparently due to perform, but it was just in preparation for the upcoming mass redundancy. In January 2023, 24 people in Sydney and 40 in Chicago were made redundant. Redundancy payouts were the absolute minimum. No bonus paid to redundant staff for their year of work. Really poor form from everyone involved. You should be ashamed. I don't expect to receive a bonus this year. My pay is already less than what I would get at other trading firms, but bonuses were decent in previous years. I'll be looking for a new shop very soon. They act like they're a family, but it's company like all the rest. The only family is the boys club at the top. Akuna is run by greedy shareholders that hired to quickly and nearly ran it into the ground. Read the other reviews, sort by negative, you'll see what people really think. Most of the positive reviews were done by interns or grads because they were forced to.

Pros

The Training: Still one of the best "Trader 101" programs in the industry. The focus on options theory and market making is rigorous. The People: You’re surrounded by high-IQ quants and devs. Low ego at the junior level. Perks: baristas, great views, and a casual "wear what you want" culture that isn’t just PR.

Cons

Meritocratic (mostly): PnL speaks. If your desk makes money, you’re generally left alone to build. Cons: * Opacity: Bonus calculations and career progression feel like a black box. There’s a noticeable "inner circle" culture at the top. Work-Life Volatility: It’s prop trading, so hours are expected, but the "always-on" expectation for global shifts can be taxing without the commensurate pay bump seen elsewhere.
