Amazing people and culture

Pros

Truly great people who are passionate about the job and duty of broadcasting for the public interest. No two days are ever the same. Work-life balance is excellent. Pay is decent, albeit not as good as the for-profit broadcasters.

Cons

Not enough funding to get everything done; loads of red tape and bureaucracy (to be expected in the public service). Decades of government cuts have meant that for newer employees, the contracts are nowhere near as good as for the grandfathered-in long-time staff - but that's another can of worms.

Broadcast technologist in ABC

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Provides more stability compared to private broadcasters. BC is a well-established and highly regarded institution in Australian media. Opportunities in TV, radio, online, and technical support. Reasonable working hours. Team-oriented culture

Cons

Changes and approvals often take time due to policies and regulatory oversight. Multiple layers of management – Can slow down decision-making, especially for technical projects and system upgrades. Salaries may not match private sector – Especially for highly skilled broadcast engineers and IT specialists. Legacy systems still in use – While ABC adopts new tech, some older systems are still widely used.
