Morale at McKinsey feels like it’s at an all-time low. Ongoing layoffs have gutted internal teams, leaving those who remain fully checked out. Senior leadership seems totally disconnected, asking for updates from teams that were eliminated months ago. Consultants are more stretched than ever, leaving less time to develop the judgment, client skills, and problem solving that once defined the firm. This place is quickly becoming a relic of the past
Would you take a $20k bump to work in person 5 days/week? (Remote Fridays in the summer) & there’s a chance the company will eventually go back to hybrid. you also get the flexibility on ur work hours so could do a 7am-3pm schedule to avoid traffic
Fellow consultants — I have a shot at management but suspect a likeability gap is holding me back. I'm great one-on-one but struggle in group culture: I prefer owning projects solo, skip the lengthy "chew the fat" discussions, and have a hard time staying quiet when I see a better path. I notice senior leaders say less — I say more. How do you learn to play the game without losing yourself?
Which programming language should I learn to break into technical roles related to AI. I have a non-technical consulting background and am currently looking to expand my skills.
Opportunity to take a job but can only stay a month and a half before my start date for another job - should I take it?
Focus all your time and energy on networking. I know some will disagree and say that cold applying still works, but for me, it didn’t. All interviews and offers came from referrals and/or directly reaching out to hiring managers.

I’ve been applying on and off for 3 months and have heard back for 4-5 roles. It’s not great out there but you will hear back. Some jobs reached out for the initial phone screen 2 months after I applied. Just do the usual stuff: ATS friendly resume format, cater your resume for each role unless the roles are pretty similar, use your connections as referrals, etc etc.
You need to be very intentional about the positions you’re applying to. You really should not be applying to more than 1-2 positions per day.

Yes I wish somebody would call me back. I have been out of work for 3 months now I applied to 203 positions only 6 contacted me. This is getting sickening
That’s a 3% response rate and it’s not bad. It’s not great but it’s not bad. This does assume that you’re applying to posted roles and aren’t using your network etc.
I have effectively not heard anything back in three years. I'll get the occasional 'lets schedule a screening' but then get completely ghosted after the screening.
Yes it’s definitely not just you. I need to hit the networking much harder
Yep can't find anything no responses through online job applications.Reaching out to people in my network even that is difficult.
Toggle your open to work off and on on LinkedIn. Might have just been luck but had three recruiters hit me within days after doing that. Landed a role quickly
It’s not just you. A lot of places have posted phantom jobs etc. it’s not a great time to be looking. That said everyone from companies to candidates are playing it safe so the market is thin to put it mildly. I don’t know when it will change.
