Pros

- Good people - Good focus on mental health and work/life balance - Good product with a strong following

Cons

- Senior leadership completely detached from the customers and employees, only concerned with stocks and shareholders. - No cohesive long term strategy at high level, given the standard "attract more customers" and "make more money". - Mid level management provide "freedom" by basically expecting teams to come up with ways to "make money" and then check in every quarter and critique teams for not "making enough money" - Low morale after reset - Pay could be higher for the work - Good place to start a career, not a great place for senior roles or parents (except in middle management)

Pros

On paper, it appears to be a fantastic company to work for and in many ways it was. Non corporate environment, casual clothes, free coffee, lots of free food and alcohol every Friday afternoon. There are *some* amazing people that work there. Rod Drury is a top bloke, and he actively engages with staff on a regular basis. Rod, you the man.

Cons

This company is riddled with entitled Department Managers who treat the lower-ranked employees like their own personal slaves. There are tight cliques and a lot of camaraderie, so don't upset the wrong person or you will have many people siding against you. There are high levels of gossip and backstabbing, more than any workplace I have ever experienced previously. Marketing manager was overhead by myself talking to Chief Marketing Officer to "get one of the minions to get us lunch." I found no guidance or support in my role. Unrealistic expectations, unappreciative staff members. Ridiculous use of budgets, never seen so much money thrown out the window on frivolous expenses. Adults acting like spoilt children. In my personal experience, I had a manager who was terrible at communicating, and would completely ignore me when one of his many unrealistic expectations wasn't met. There was no teamwork in my particular team, and coming to work was like spinning a roulette to see what mood my Manager was in on that particular day. He was moody, unapproachable and lacked all managerial direction. I was personally treated like a scapegoat to everyone else's needs and my Manager would throw me under the bus at any given chance in order to make himself look better. In my opinion, many of the Managers are not qualified or suited to their roles, and this reflects strongly in the way they conduct themselves. Many people in this company are taking advantage of knowing the right people, often from previous workplaces. HR department are not to be trusted; I brought forward my concerns about my Manager and was promptly let go by the end of that week, due to being still within my probation period. The meeting in which I was let go during was booked by myself with the belief that it would be a mediation between HR, myself and my department Manager to help open up doors so communication could improve. I was sorely mistaken. The separation letter I was given had a number of petty dot points that contained no substance.

Thank you for your feedback it's really valuable. We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your experience at Xero. Xero is a fast paced change rich environment with a unique culture. The probation period is as much for employees as for Xero to see if the cultural fit is there. In some cases unfortunately it isn't and its good to call that out early. We are regularly told that Xero's leadership team are extremely approachable, genuine and transparent in their communication. I'm sorry to hear that wasn't your experience.

Pros

You can't get fired. In eternal engagement surveys year after year the number one complaint by staff "Poor performance is dealt with effectively in this organization" keeps topping the charts. You would have thought they would have done something about that but relax. If you're mediocre there's plenty of places to hide in Xero. Great place for people starting their careers. Xero has a very low hurdle rate to get into the organization. If you don't have much in the way of qualifications but you're a New Zealander you'll be looked after. Having a beard also helps :)

Cons

The following areas were highlighted in the last Employee Engagement Survey as poor performing areas for the business 1. Lack of career opportunities. (See my Pros section. If you're in one of these two categories you'll love the place) 2. Lack of coaching to help improve performance. (Never had any one on one coaching during my time. Had plenty of meetings) 3. Doesn't utilize my skill set 4. Learning and development opportunities in the company The reality is the longer you stay the more dissatisfied you become with the place. (That's also mentioned in the survey) They say they're a corporate but they don't invest in people or pay like corporates. A lot of smart money exits are starting to take place as people with the brains who do the work take flight to green pastures. Only the mediocre who don't have opportunities continue to stay. Finally, any positive reviews from employees tend to come from those who have only done around 12 months (most of the company) As mentioned previously in the EES there are no opportunities to advance to senior management positions. Everyone has been appointed externally.
