In Japanese "mitsubishi" means "three diamonds" and Mitsubishi Corporation is one of Japan's crown jewels. The "sogo shosha", or trading company, operates through six main business groups: living essentials (agricultural products, food and beverages, textiles, and construction materials); metals; machinery (power generation equipment, electrical systems, automobiles); energy (liquefied natural gas, crude oil); and chemicals (petrochemicals, fertilizers, plastics). Its other main business group is industrial finance, which handles banking, asset management, construction, and logistics. Mitsubishi operates a network of more than 500 group companies in 80 countries.

To "air" is human and to have air conditioning, divine. Founded in 1924, Daikin Industries makes air conditioning and refrigeration products for residential and industrial use worldwide. Residential products include air cleaners, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners; industrial products range from infrared ceramic space heaters to marine vessel air conditioners. Daikin also has chemicals (fluorocarbons, surfactants, and mold-release agents), oil hydraulics, and defense divisions; combined, they account for close to 15% of revenues. The company's acquisition of O.Y.L. Industries made it the #1 air conditioning maker after Carrier.
